Nyquist Undergoes Colic Surgery, Still Set for Stallion Duty

2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist is doing well one day after undergoing colic surgery, Darley announced Friday.

“At this point, we are confident that he will be fully recovered and ready for the 2017 breeding season,” said Darley’s chief operating officer, Dan Pride.

“The surgeons discovered a slight twist in his intestines during the procedure and were able to make the necessary repairs without complication,” Pride said of the surgery at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute.

Nyquist, a 3-year-old son of Uncle Mo, went into the Kentucky Derby undefeated and extended his winning streak to eight with a 1 1/4-length victory over Exaggerator, who went on to beat him in the Preakness.

Nyquist’s other wins included the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Best Pal, Del Mar Futurity and FrontRunner Stakes — all in 2015 — and the San Vicente and Florida Derby this year.

He finished third in the Preakness, fourth in the Haskell Invitational and sixth in the Pennsylvania Derby.

The Doug O’Neill trainee retired this fall with eight wins in 11 starts and nearly $5.2 million in earnings.
