Earnings for 2014 – Horse of the Year?

California Chrome

California Chrome Breeders’ Cup Classic

Bill Talk of the TrackThis is the time of the year when the Eclipse Award is given for Horse of the Year. On our Facebook page both California Chrome and Bayern were most often chosen by fans. Of course money probably won’t be the determining factor but below is the ranked earnings of 2014 as provided by Equibase. California Chrome won the first two legs of the Triple Crown, is one of only two horses to win four Grade I stakes and is by far the most popular race horse in America. All breeders/trainers/Jockeys goal is to win the Kentucky Derby. So of all the major races that is the most cherished which Chrome won.

You cannot overlook Bayern’s performance in the Woody Stephens on Belmont Stakes day. A few weeks later in the Haskell Invitational, he ran away from his competition, including the brilliant filly Untapable, a Horse of the Year contender in her own right. And of course he had a brilliant but controversial win in November in the Breeders’ Cup classic in Santa Anita.

Wouldn’t it be great to see a match race that included California Chrome, Bayern Shared Belief. The world would tune in for that. All three will return for the 2015 season.

Take a look at the list of earnings. You will be able to see a number of races. However you can’t discern the best times or degree of competition?
